Since 2020 — when George Floyd's murder was seen around the world and protests for racial justice swept the country — many Americans with white skin have begun to think explicitly about race and its consequences. What does it mean to be white in America? What’s it like to be not-white-enough? Or to not have your racial identity reflected on official government forms? How did white become the default against which all other skin colors are measured?

Mosiah 11–17

In this episode we’ll talk about Mosiah chapters eleven through seventeen. These chapter have the beginning of the story of King Noah and his people, including the account of Abinadi the prophet. We’ll talk about Abinadi’s mission and how he remained faithful despite many significant challenges. We’ll discuss the idea of choice and consequence. We’ll review the strides that society has made in mental health awareness, and also the pitfalls that can come from incorrect understanding of the nature of mental health issues and our capacity for change.

Choosing Joy Amidst War & Tragedy

When Michele Green was a little girl living in Vietnam, her town was brutally attacked by escaped convicts from a nearby prison, and most of her family were killed, including her parents. Now an orphan, Michele's life looked bleak.  But God had a plan for her that eventually led her to the gospel, and ultimately to the United States. With her new found faith, Michele got married and raised an amazing family; however, more trials and tragedy waited in the wings, including various bouts with cancer - one of which led to the loss of a son, a tragic car accident that took the life of another, and a debilitating stroke that left her husband incapacitated for 21 years - forcing her to become his primary caregiver while working full-time and raising their 9 children.

Doug is the former president of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality. During his lifetime, he has also been a counselor, parish pastor, and professor. In his teachings, Doug intentionally creates time and space for silence, listening, and reflection so that learning is accompanied by a personal transformation that goes deep.

Finding the Still Point in Tension

This week we’re joined by our good friend and contributor to Faith Matters, Thomas McConkie, along with his longtime mentor and friend, John Kesler. In many ways, Thomas and John's paths were mirror images of each other until they eventually collided. John Kesler developed an awareness and life practice called IPP or Integral Polarity Practice that has had a profound impact on Thomas's life. Welcoming Young Women into the Bishop’s Office

Jennie Blaser is the ninth of 11 children and has lived all over the world: Hawaii, Utah, California, Arizona, Argentina, Slovenia, and Hong Kong. She served an 18-month mission in one branch in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and speaks English, Spanish, and Slovenian. She graduated in International Finance with a minor in Spanish from Brigham Young University, returning to earn an MBA. Jennie has taught early morning Seminary, Marriage and Family Relations, Relief Society, Sunday School, and Gospel Doctrine. She has also served as a second counselor in a Young Women presidency twice and second counselor in a Relief Society presidency five times. Jennie is currently the second counselor in her stake Young Women presidency.
