Helaman 12 has always bothered me because it seems so implausible -- even impossible! But if we take a closer look at it we find that not only is it possible, but we might just be guilty of doing what it says!

Nephi is kind of the hero of the book of Helaman-- he's out there starting and stopping famines, throwing out prophecies, and being overall amazing. But Helaman 11 teaches us something extremely important to keep in mind when we look at the "Nephi"s in our own lives.

In Helaman 8 we find Nephi in a whole lot of trouble-- the judges (who are also Gadianton Robbers) want to throw him into prison to get rid of him.   The majority of the people are ready to go along with the judges until "some" of the people show just how brave they are.

In Helaman 6 the Nephites are turning away from righteousness and the Spirit withdraws from them. But the real question here is: who pulled back first?

Helaman 5 teaches us about an interesting relationship within our spirituality.   There is a constant push and pull going on within us between our righteousness and the pull toward wickedness, and there's never a moment in which the pull is neutral.
