What Does Justice in Healthcare Look Like?

Who deserves good health? It’s what we all want and shapes many of our decisions, but it’s not entirely within our control. The water we drink, air we breathe, and communities we live in all influence our health. How do we determine justice in healthcare? Some people have worse health because of factors beyond their control; is that fair? In this podcast episode, we’ll speak with a doctor who believes he owes his patients more than just competent care. We’ll consider how we decide, as a society, who gets priority when health resources are scarce, such as transplant organs. And we’ll hear a legal scholar’s take on what a system of “just health” looks like in the face of systemic inequality. How can we be sure that we’re not setting people up for shorter, sicker lives just because they have less power in society?

Matthew 11–12; Luke 11

In this episode we'll talk about Matthew 11 and 12 and Luke 11. We'll discuss one of the parables in Luke 11, where one possible interpretation has to do with the process of personal change. We'll talk about how change is most effectively accomplished when previous, less effective habits and beliefs are replaced with new, more effective habits and beliefs. This process is designed to happen slowly and deliberately to have good effect. We'll also talk about the Savior's invitation in Matthew 11:28-30 and how His promise of peace and rest involves action on our part. We'll discuss how changing the way we think about things can change our emotions.

Our guest was Liz Shropshire, the founder of Peace Through Music.In our interview with her, Liz tells the story of how she got started teaching music to children in Kosovo who had been affected by the war and ethnic cleansing that took place there in the 1990s. She knew just two things: she could teach music, and she wanted to help: so she got on a plane and made her way to a refugee camp where she began teaching her first group of kids.
